The exhibition and book Nationalgalerie brings together Demand’s work of the last 15 years which is rooted in German imagery. Demand examines the “Deutschlandbild”, the ‘German image’, in photographs from a variety of scenarios in the post-war period. From a selection both known and new of key images of decisive political events and private moments Demand offers a kaleidoscopic vision of a society.
The publication accompanying the exhibition is not a conventional catalogue; it is an artist's book. Each picture is preceded by a text written by Botho Strauß in order to get pictures and texts into a close yet independent dialogue. The book, Nationalgalerie, also has a pivotal function in the exhibition. A special edition of hand-bound copies is displayed in glass cases in front of each picture, thus adding a literary component to visual contemplation and taking the tradition of accompanying "texts at the wall" a step further. This special edition may be purchased after the exhibition is over. For more information and reservation of copies, please, phone +44 208 299 8847.
